Sault Area Hospital President and CEO Ila Watson Announces Retirement

Sault Ste. Marie, ON – The Board of Directors of Sault Area Hospital (SAH) announces that President and Chief Executive Officer Ila Watson will retire in early summer 2026, concluding a distinguished 37-year career in the public and broader public sectors.

Watson joined SAH in 2009 as Vice President and Chief Human Resources Officer and has served as President and CEO since 2021. During her tenure, she has played a central role in shaping the organization and strengthening its ability to deliver high-quality care to the communities of Sault Ste. Marie and the Algoma district.

“Ila has provided steady, principled, and visionary leadership during a time of significant change in health care,” said Mark Lepore, Chair of the SAH Board of Directors. “She has been instrumental in advancing our strategic direction, strengthening partnerships across the health system, and ensuring that patients and families in Algoma have access to outstanding care close to home. On behalf of the Board, I want to thank Ila for her remarkable leadership and lasting contributions to Sault Area Hospital and our community.”

Watson was a key member of the executive team that oversaw the transition to the hospital’s current facility in 2011 and has helped guide the organization through years of transformation and growth. Her leadership has supported expanded services, stronger collaboration across the regional health system, and the continued development of a culture grounded in quality, compassion, and continuous improvement.

During her tenure as President and CEO, Watson has achieved significant milestones, including playing a pivotal role as a founding partner of the Algoma Ontario Health Team, opening the Northway Wellness Centre, and expanding care close to home through the development and growth of cardiac services. She has championed advancing strategic priorities in Indigenous Health and Research. Under her leadership, these efforts have been accompanied by steady increases in employee, physician, and volunteer engagement.

“It has been an extraordinary privilege to work alongside the talented and dedicated staff, physicians, volunteers, and partners who make Sault Area Hospital such an incredible organization,” said Watson. “I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to serve this community. Together, we have navigated challenges and advanced important work to strengthen care for the people of Algoma. I am proud of what we have accomplished and look forward to seeing the hospital continue to grow and succeed in the years ahead.”

The Board of Directors has initiated a comprehensive recruitment process to identify SAH’s next President and Chief Executive Officer. Executive search firm Odgers Berndtson will lead the search.

“The Board is committed to conducting a thoughtful and thorough search for the next leader of Sault Area Hospital,” Lepore said. “With the support of Odgers Berndtson, we will undertake a national recruitment process to identify an exceptional candidate who will build on the strong foundation established under Ila’s leadership.”

Watson will continue to serve as President and CEO until her retirement to support a smooth leadership transition.
